Born in Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada, Dave has lived across Canada and in Italy. He has also traveled through parts of Europe, Cuba, China and Romania. He and his family live in Delta, British Columbia.
Dave studied art at Vancouver Community College, Langara, and the University of British Columbia, and the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. Over the last 35 years he has been working as an artist, and for 29 of those years he has also been an art teacher in the public school system. His work includes drawings, printmaking, painting, sculpture and mixed media. Dave has worked on a number of themes over the years but tends mostly towards landscapes and images expressing our humanity. In the past he has explored 12 men carrying stones to build a memorial, the wind made visible as it touches the world and erosion of sandstone and wood.
Recently Dave has concentrated on images that reflect the west coast of Canada, especially the Gulf Islands, where he and his family spend their summers. Two of his favorite subjects are arbutus trees and mechanical insects. Arbutus trees have attracted his attention because they are indigenous to the West Coast and because there are few straight lines on these trees. He has stripped down their details to just the trunk and branches rendered in reds to stand out from different backgrounds. Sometime these landscapes are grey and overcast, while other times Dave has used a greater variety of colours. The fractal landscapes refer to the order and structure that underlies nature. The surrealism and humanity based drawings flow from a love of creating images and tones with different drawing materials. The ink drawings start with water on paper that ink is touched into to create bleeds and accidental textures. These are then worked into more controlled drawings making connections about the human condition.
Dave’s goal as an artist is to create works that captivate viewers through both the concept of the work as well as its visual form. Historically works that have maintained their audience have connected both for their visual aesthetics as well their intent, somewhere between Classicism and Romanticism, or Expressionism and Formalism.
